Before you look in

Nearly all of what makes a cup readable is done before anyone looks into it, and none of it is hard. Most of it is waiting.

Drink, and leave the last mouthful
Take every sip from the same side of the rim, and stop while there is still sludge in the bottom. That last mouthful holds every ground in the cup. Without it there is nothing to read.
Make a wish, then turn it over
One wish to a cup, made before your hand moves. Then the saucer goes on top and the whole thing is turned over in one go. Leave it where it lands.
Leave it until it is cold
Cold to the touch, and the saucer with it. However long that takes, the cup stays face down and you find something else to do with your hands.
Lift it straight up, and look
No tilting. Start at the rim and work down to the base, and say the first shape you see out loud, before you have had time to talk yourself out of it.
